Hesburgh Library > Exhibits > Creating Writing Program
Is a two year writing immersion. The program is distinguished by its strong literary character. At Notre Dame, writing is art: form meets content, voice meets ear, writer meets writer.
We are a diverse group of all ages and backgrounds. The program is small and congenial by design, but is also part of a lively intellectual community in the larger English Department. Nationally acclaimed writers lead workshops and serve as one-on-one thesis advisers for the M.F.A. thesis, a book-length collection of student writing. We also offer specialized workshops in literary publishing and translation, and we help students to plan a course of study in our department’s distinguished graduate program, where we offer poetics and narrative theory; contemporary American literature; Irish, Latino, and African-American studies; and a wide range of other literary pleasures.
Students and Graduates
Our students and graduates have been published in a wide range of literary venues, from The New Yorker and Esquire to the New England Review, Callaloo, and Puerto del Sol. We provide practical information about publishing, but we don’t rush that process: We encourage students to publish when they’re ready and meanwhile provide a writing refuge.
Financial Aid
All accepted students receive full tuition waivers. Applicants are also considered for additional support, including teaching, editorial, and administrative assistantships and fellowships.
The Notre Dame Review
provides editorial training in print and online publishing to all interested M.F.A. students. For a look at an online version, go to www.nd.edu/~ndr/review.htm.
