Alpha and Omega
"I
am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, who is and who was
and who is coming". The first and last letters of the Greek alphabet
are chosen to denote the Lord God, who is the First, because there is no
God before him, and the Last, because there is no God after him. The symbolism
of the first and the last letter of the alphabet is, in all probability,
of Jewish origin.
Note: All of these symbols can be seen on the outside walls of the Hesburgh
Library.
