Symbols of Christ

Fish of the Living

fish of the living

It is generally believed that the symbol of the fish is a Christian invention, and it is derived from the fact that the letters of the Greek word for fish Ichthys, are an abbreviation of the name and the titles of Christ: "Iesous Christos Theou Yios Soter--Jesus Christ, God's Son, Saviour. Symbol of luck, of life, and of fertility.

Note: All of these symbols can be seen on the outside walls of the Hesburgh Library.
