The Key of David
The
fact that Christ delegated his authority to St. Peter and the other Apostles
(John 20:23) keeps him present in the Church as the Key to whom she addresses
herself in the fourth of the Great Antiphons of Advent: "O Key of David, and Sceptre of the house of Israel; that openest, and no man shuttests, and shuttest, and no man openeth: come and bring the prisoner out of the prison house, and him that sittest in darkness, and the shadow of death."
