Access Policies

Priority for the use of the Center's collection and equipment is, in all cases, given to students and faculty using the facilities for course-related purposes. During peak use periods, use of the Center is restricted to individuals engaged in course-related work.

Materials in the Renner collection may be used on-site in the Center only (items may not be checked out for home use). Current ND, St. Mary's, Holy Cross, or Bethel faculty may make arrangements to borrow materials for up to 72 hours for in-classroom use or in connection with the Kaneb Center. Please Note: the AudioVisual Center does not deliver or pick up items checked out, it is the faculty member's responsibility to return all items to the Audio Visual department. Feel free to use the drop box next to the A/V counter anytime after hours and on weekends to return materials.

Our Collections

Music: The Audio Collection is predominantly Classical Music but also contains a sizable Jazz and Popular/Rock Collection for listening. The collections are heavily used for classwork, although open for leisure listening. The LP and Audio Cassette collection is a combination of all music along with spoken word (Shakespeare, Poetry, Plays, etc.).

Video: Our Video collection includes everything from feature films, music, Shakespeare, and documentaries for both class, work, and leisure watching. At all times, class work takes precedence over leisure listening or viewing.

Audio Books: The Audio Visual Center has books on CD and Cassette available to students and faculty for a one (1) week checkout. There is a master list of these items available in a folder at the A/V circulation desk.

Purchase Policies: If you have a request for any Audio Video title for class or research please contact your subject librarian or fill out the Recommendation for Purchase form.

DVD: The Hesburgh Library currently purchases DVDs from all seven regions and also maintains players for these regions.

VHS: The Hesburgh Library does not actively purchase VHS titles unless they are the only available copy of the desired title. The A/V center is capable of playing both NTSC and PAL formats. However, the Audio Video Center is unable to make copies of VHS materials due to copyright restrictions and they also are unable to loan out equipment. To obtain equipment loans visit the OIT web site for Presentation Technologies and see the form for Conference and Equipment Rental.

Music: The Hesburgh Library primarily collects the CD format of music titles. Other formats are considered on title-by-title basis. The Audio Video Center is capable of playing CD, LP, and Audio Cassette formats.
