Library Resources for Concourse

The Libraries provides four ways to integrate library content into Concourse:

  1. Electronic Reserves
  2. Links to Databases
  3. Custom Page of Library Resources
  4. Links to Electronic Journal Articles

1. Electronic Reserves
The Libraries Electronic Reserves Service allows you to request that articles in journals, book chapters, and other materials be digitized, or linked to, for convenient use by your students.  The Libraries have developed a service which allows e-reserves content to be included inside your own section via a link to our electronic reserves management system. Digitized content is protected to meet fair use criteria but is more transparently available to your students within the course section.

2. Links to Databases
You can easily add a link to library research resources such as PsycINFO, Oxford English Dictionary, American National Biography in your course section. Links can appear on your main page, or can be moved into an Organizer folder. Following these instructions will ensure a persistent link which will not fail.

    • Choose an electronic resource from the Libraries Website at http://www.library.nd.edu
      • For IE users - Right click the resource title. Choose 'Copy Shortcut.'
      • For Netscape users- Right click the resource title. Choose 'Copy Link Location.'
      • For Mac users - Choose catalog icon ND Catalog Record next to resource title. Copy the link shown in the 'External' field. This is the persistent link for the resource.

3. Custom Page of Library Resources
Your subject librarian will be happy to help design a 'custom' pathfinder where many database links can be organized according to your choices of description and layout. The pathfinder page can then be added to your course using the Concourse "Web Link" Tool.

  • Example of basic custom page (http://www.library.nd.edu/cms/courses/the101.shtml)
  • Custom library resource pages can include both database links and links to electronic journal articles.

4. Links to Electronic Journal Articles
You can easily add persistent links to electronic journal articles by using the Article Linker Tool  (http://www.library.nd.edu/eresources/ejournal_locator/articles.php).  Once you have the link, use the Concourse "Web Link" Tool to add the article persistent link, and the article title information. Be sure to check the 'Open in new browser window' option.

Why is this better than copying the article pdf file directly into my course? This method includes the familiar FindText link to the needed article. FindText includes options for help and access to alternative providers that might exist. It is a preferred method because it preserves the IP authentication for access, thus supporting fair use best practices.
