Collection Development Department

The Collection Development Department is a unit in the Resources and Collections Services Division of the University Libraries. Collection Development responsibilities are threefold: manage collections with emphasis on the selection of materials in all formats for the University Libraries; to provide subject-oriented bibliographic instruction; and to give reference assistance of a specialized subject nature.   The Department builds and advocates for research level collections in specific areas with an emphasis on the Libraries’ Distinguished Collections.

The Department includes Subject Librarians, who have a primary, full-time assignment to collection development activities, and support staff.  A Subject Librarian is responsible for collection development and management of one or more subject areas, including selection, communication with subject department faculty, deselection, preservation selection, and other appropriate collection activities.  The proportion of time devoted to collection development varies by individual.
