The Bronze Screen [videorecording] / Bronze Screen
Productions in association with the Latino Entertainment Media Institute.

Abstract:

The Bronze screen honors the past, illuminates the
present, and opens a window to the future of Latinos in
motion pictures. From silent movies to urban gang
films, stereotypes of the Greaser, the Lazy Mexican,
the Latin lover and the Dark lady are examined. Rare
and extensive footage traces the progression of this
distorted screen image to the increased prominence of
today's Latino actors, writers and directors.

Abstract: In 1996, a group of legendary Cuban musicians were
brought together by Ry Cooder to record a CD. This film
shows some of their songs being recorded in the studio,
concert footage from Amsterdam and New York City, and
some of the musicians talking about their lives in Cuba
and how they got started in music. In Spanish and
English.

produced by Lisa Maria Salb in conjunction with Caribbean Music and Dance Programs.

Abstract:

This video portrays Cuba's folkloric traditions and its
contemporary art scene, focusing on the everyday life of Cuban musicians and dancers, who incorporate these traditions into their work. Shot in homes and on the streets on Cuba, the video captures the rich connections between generations, African and Latino culture, religion, daily life and art. Features pianist Chucho Valdes, dancer Librada Quesada, salsa king Isaac Delgado, and Los Van Van founder Juan Formell, as well as footage from Havana's International Jazz Festival and the folkloric groups Raices Profundas and los Munequitos de Matanzas.

Title:

Latino Artists: Pushing artistic boundaries. [videorecording]

Abstract:

The first part of this program introduces the founding
members of the visual artists/performance group, ASCO.
Formed as a reaction to the anger and despair they felt as Latin American outcasts in their own country, this group turned to artistic activism with the production of paintings, magazines, videos, street performances, and photographs. The second part of the program visits the Nuyorican Poet's Cafe, founded by playwright Miguel Pinero and Professor Miguel Algarin, in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The Cafe's stage introduces the newest generation of writers who share their work and their vision of identity and cultural duality as Puerto Ricans living in New York.
