Architecture

 

PROGRAMS AND CLIENTELE SUPPORTED:

Teaching and research to the masters level are supported in the following areas: classical architecture, urban design; especially Chicago and Rome; architectural history, design and theory, classical revival in English and American architecture and interior design, 20th century Italian architecture, church architecture, structural mechanics and building technology.

GENERAL COLLECTING GUIDELINES:

Languages: The primary language of the collection is English. Italian language materials are acquired through the Cassalini Libri approval plan. German language materials are acquired selectively. Classical treatises are acquired in reprint in the original Latin, whenever possible.

Chronological: No limitation.

Treatment of subject: Scholarly treatments and books focusing on design, individual architects, classical architecture, the classical revival, and church architecture are collected. Materials in structural, mechanical and environmental systems and CAD are collected selectively.

Types of material: The collection includes treatises, directories, encyclopedias, atlases, journals, folio volumes, and collected works. Important materials available only on microform are also acquired.

COORDINATION INFORMATION:

There is coordination with American Studies, the Medieval Institute, Art History, and Engineering.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS:

The Architecture Library has two endowed funds: the Thomas and Anne Wamser Family Endowment in Architecture and the Eli J. and Helen Shaheen Collection in Architecture.

The Hesburgh Library and the Medieval Institute also have some holdings in architecture.
