Collection Development Policy
Chemistry

PROGRAMS AND CLIENTELE SUPPORTED:

Teaching and research through the doctoral level are supported in the following areas: analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, and physical chemistry/ chemical physics. While interest in these areas is centered in the Department of Chemistry, faculty and students in related departments, e.g. Biological Science, Chemical Engineering, and the Radiation Laboratory also have special interest in one or more of the areas.

GENERAL COLLECTION GUIDELINES:

Languages:  The primary language of collection is English, but materials in other languages are acquired selectively. Translations into English are preferred whenever possible.

Chronological:  Emphasis is on the current developments. For materials on the history of chemistry, see the History of Science policy.

Geographical:  Not applicable.

Treatment of subject:  Emphasis is on research materials. Textbooks are acquired selectively for undergraduate and graduate studies. Popular treatments are acquired for Hesburgh Library. biography and history of chemistry are acquired selectively to support teaching needs.

Types of Material:  Encyclopedias, dictionaries, treatises, compendia, spectral, and data collections are acquired. Conference proceedings are generally not acquired.

COORDINATION INFORMATION:

Applied aspects of geochemistry and chemical engineering are collected in the Engineering Library. Biochemistry, nutrition, histochemistry, and phytochemistry are collected cooperatively with Life Sciences Library. Physical chemistry, radiation chemistry and photochemistry are collected more extensively in the Radiation Chemistry Library.
