PROGRAMS AND CLIENTELE SUPPORTED:
The Department of Romance Languages offers the B.A. and M.A. degree in French. Undergraduate majors are required to take courses in the following two categories: Medieval/Renaissance/Classical literature and 18th/19th/20th century literature. The primary aim of the Master's program is "to provide students with a comprehensive background in the literary and cultural achievements of French-...speaking countries." (Graduate School Bulletin of Information , 2002-2003). The Department has eight regular faculty members who support French literature curriculum and research.

GENERAL COLLECTING GUIDELINES:
Languages: French and English.
Chronological: Medieval to modern.
Geographical: Primarily France with selections from Franco-phone countries, including Canada and the Maghreb (Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia) among others.
Treatment of Subject: Literary and scholarly level; selected popular works; generally not juvenile literature or textbooks.
Types of Material: Basic literary texts (including complete works of selected major authors); critical monographs, proceedings, serials, and reference works. Selected audio-visual and electronic resources.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS:
There are four main methods for
acquiring materials related to French language and literature include:
the French approval plan with Aux Amateurs des Livres; the English language
plan with Blackwell North America; firm ordering individual items; and
standing orders for series and serials. The Medieval Institute devotes
a small amount to medieval French vernacular literature.
