PROGRAMS AND CLIENTELE SUPPORTED:
The Department of Music at the University of Notre Dame is a small, but specialized and highly successful program. The Department serves two sets of clientele: (1) the student who chooses music as a major area of concentration at either the undergraduate or graduate level, and (2) the nonmusic student who is given the opportunity to broaden their education through participation in musical ensembles, applied instrumental or vocal training, or elective introductory, historical, and theoretical courses. The curricula center around European- and Western-based serious music. On both the undergraduate and graduate level, the degree programs emphasize musicology, music theory and composition, and music performance. A well-regarded and widely respected faculty of scholars and performers support these programs. As an undergraduate a student may pursue one of three possible degrees: (1) a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music with a concentration in either Music History and Literature, Music Theory, or Performance; (2) a double-degree program that combines a Bachelor or Arts degree in a discipline other than music with a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Theory or Performance; and (3) a Bachelor of Arts degree with a second major in music. On the graduate level, the Department of Music offers two degrees: (1) the Master of Music degree with specialization in Performance and Literature, and (2) the Master of Arts degree with specialization in Historical Musicology, Music Theory, or Music Composition. A proposed doctorate program (expected to be approved by the 1995-96 academic year) will offer programs leading to either the Doctor of Philosophy degree with specialization in either Historical Musicology or Music Theory or the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in various performance specialties.

GENERAL COLLECTING GUIDELINES:
In order to properly support the current curricula, the library collections need to include a comprehensive collection of musical scholarship in music history, music literature, music criticism, music sociology, music theory, composition methodology, and music bibliography. These areas of musical literature need to be both current and retrospective in both monographic and journal formats. The music (as opposed to literature) collection must include a complete collection of historical sets and monuments of music (Denkm„ler) and complete works sets (Gesamtausgaben). Similarly necessary are a comprehensive collection of study scores, performing editions, and recordings and video formats of (multiple) authoritative editions of older music and a representative collection of similar formats for works by major contemporary composers of serious music. A moderate collection of performing methods for all the standard orchestral and band instruments should also be included.
Languages: English, French, German, Italian, and Latin are emphasized.
Chronological: The entire history of music is appropriate for study within the curriculum, but six stylistic periods are emphasized: Medieval (AD 500-1300), Renaissance (1300-1600), Baroque (1580-1750), Classical (1730-1810), Romantic (1800-1900), and Contemporary (1900-).
Geographical: In historical terms, the music of Western and Eastern Europe and of the United States are emphasized. In the contemporary world, the liturgical and concert (serious) music of the entire world is considered.
Treatment of Subject (Formats of Materials):
Music: The collection of printed music includes full scores, study scores, and historical sets and monuments of music. Sets of performing parts for solo and chamber music only are also included on an equal basis. Popular music is generally excluded, but vocal scores of classic musical comedies and revues and study scores of film music ("Oklahoma," "Cats," "Phantom of the Opera," etc.) are collected as representative examples of that genre. Authentic, well-edited editions of Irish folk and traditional music are collected as additions to and support for the Francis O'Neill Irish Music Collection.
Music Literature: The monograph and journal collection focuses on scholarly research in the areas of historical musicology, criticism and stylistic analysis, bibliography and discography, and biography with regard to serious music. The latter category emphasizes composers and performers, but may include studies of the lives and works of others involved in music, such as publishers, entrepreneurs, librettists, etc. Works intended primarily as instructional works or textbooks are excluded from the scope of this collection except in the MT classifications. In the latter area, textbooks are often the primary sources of theoretical discussions. Also instrumental and vocal tutors are collected selectively.
Scholarly monographs concerned with ethnic studies in music are collected selectively as a manner of providing a general documentation of all aspects of music. A special case in this regard is scholarly monographs concerning folk and traditional Irish music, which is collected in support of the O'Neill Collection.
Materials dealing with popular music, including rock, rap, hip-hop, etc., are very selectively included since this type of music is a so pervasive element in contemporary culture and its documentation will be of historical importance in the future. Scholarly, reference, and bibliographical treatments of this subject are emphasized, but less academic works may be accepted since this is often the only available form in which such materials are available. Popular biographies of performers are avoided.
Jazz--in all of its aspects--is an intermediate case in this respect. Jazz is an important element in the worldwide musical scene, and scholarly research in this area is collected to a lesser extent than those works that feature what is commonly called classical music, but to a greate extent than popular music.
Recordings and Video Materials: Recordings are collected in the same areas and with the emphases as printed music. Multiple performances of each work are acquired without consideration of "duplication of works." Recordings of authentic performances of well-edited versions of Irish traditional music are collected as support for the O'Neill Collection. Selected examples of musical comedies and revues and film music are collected as representative examples of an important aspect of American music. Compact discs are the preferred format for recordings, but when cd's are not available, the preferred formats are (in priority order) analog discs, DAT cassettes, and reel-to-reel tapes.
Music is a live discipline--that is, the physical presence of listener and performer is an important aspect of music. This is especially true with regard to opera, but also valid with regard to other music. Therefore, video recordings are an important aspect of the music collection. Emphasis in this area is opera, but other types of musical video recordings--concerts, recitals, instructional materials, master classes, etc.--are also collected as appropriate. The preferred format must be laser disc, which is more durable in terms of both usage and type of recording, and when sufficient appropriate reproduction equipment is available, this format will be emphasized. Until then, VHS video cassette will be the standard, but replacement o worn-out items must be a major consideration.
CD-ROM Materials: Although generally speaking music has been slower to find ways in which the CD-ROM format can be appreciably more useful than paper formats, two areas are developing that should become part of the library as the materials demonstrate their validity in that format. Bibliographic materials, such as RILM Abstracts, Music Index, the British Library Music Catalog, Catalog of the Bibliotheque National de Brussels, Monuments of Music, Historical Sets, and Collection Editions , and others, should be acquired in CD-ROm format as soon as the platforms have been proven usable. Instructional CD-ROM materials, such as those that combine scores and recordings, should be purchased selectively to fulfill specific pedagogical requirements.
COORDINATION INFORMATION:
Necessary coordination between the music collection and the Audio-Video Center collection for music is accomplished through the activities of the Bibliographer, who is responsible for collection development in both areas.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATION S:
The binding of all scores added to the collection is very important to the preservation and maintenance of the music collection. Pamphlet binding is recommended for smaller scores and sets of parts with more permanent hand binding reserved for larger scores.
