Collection Development Policy
Physics & Astronomy

PROGRAMS AND CLIENTELE SUPPORTED:

Teaching and research through the doctoral level are supported in the following areas: atomic physics, elementary particle physics, nuclear physics, solid state physics, low temperature physics, and theoretical physics. Teaching and research in astronomy are also supported. While interest in these areas is centered in the Department of Physics, faculty and students in Chemistry, Engineering, Mathematics, and the Radiation Laboratory also have special interest in one or more of the areas.

GENERAL COLLECTING GUIDELINES:

Languages:  The primary language of collection is English, but materials in other languages are acquired selectively. Translations into English are preferred whenever available.

Chronological:  Emphasis is on current developments, as well as the history and philosophy of modern physics. For other materials on the history of physics, see the History of Science policy.

Geographical:  Not applicable.

Treatment of subject:  Emphasis is on research materials. Textbooks are acquired only by faculty request; popular treatments are selectively purchased for Hesburgh Library.

Types of materials:  Encyclopedias, treatises, compendia, directories, proceedings of conferences, technical reports.

COORDINATION INFORMATION:

Works on semiconductors, superconductivity, and thermodynamics are also collected in the Engineering Library. Biophysics is treated in the Life Science policy; geophysics in the Earth Sciences policy; physical chemistry in the Chemistry policy and Radiation Chemistry policy; radiation physics in the Radiation Chemistry policy; materials science in the Engineering policy.
