PROGRAMS AND CLIENTELE SUPPORTED:
To support undergraduate and graduate teaching and research to the doctoral level, along with individual faculty research projects, by the acquisition and selection of materials for the Hesburgh Library collection. Among other requirements Ph.D. candidates must complete core courses in sociological methods and theory, along with a course in social statistics. Each candidate in the doctoral programs must select two areas of specialization. The department is especially strong in Methodology and Statistics, Theory, Social Organization, Social Psychology, Marriage and the Family, Sociology of Religion, Comparative Historical, Political, Education, and Development.

GENERAL COLLECTING GUIDELINES:
Languages: The predominate emphasis is upon American society, with additional materials selected from Western European, Russian, Chinese, and Japanese societies, but no area is excluded from consideration.
Chronological period: Contemporary period, with less emphasis upon historical eras.
Types of material: Monographs, treatises, and compendiums.
Periodicals, serials, and monographic serials. Reference works including but not limited to encyclopedias, dictionaries, indexes/abstracts, handbooks, guides, catalogs of subject collections. Dissertations primarily Notre Dame, with select others upon request. Proceedings or reports of conferences, symposia, international congresses et. al. Government Documents. Since the University of Notre Dame is a US governmental depository, acquiring many US, UN, EEC, and other foreign documents the work of the subject specialist in this area is supplementary to that of the Government Documents Librarian. Non-governmental documents such as the annual reports of private or quasi-public organizations, societies, etc. Microforms of published and unpublished collections and materials.COORDINATION INFORMATION:
Due to the interdisciplinary nature of sociology materials are also occasionally selected in the areas of Women's Studies, Gender Studies, Catholic Studies, American Studies, and Liberal Studies
