PROGRAMS AND CLIENTELE SUPPORTED:
Supports courses offered periodically at the undergraduate level in sociology, psychology, history, English, American studies and the Law School. Research interest occurs among faculty in these same areas. In addition, collecting supports the work of university staff and academic and independent researchers world-wide.

GENERAL COLLECTING GUIDELINES:
Languages: Primarily English, but works on the Olympics are collected in all languages and significant scholarly works are collected in German, French, Spanish and Italian.
Chronological: The emphasis is on the modern, post 1800 period.
Geographical: Other than the Olympics, the emphasis is on materials on the U.S., but significant scholarly works on sports in other areas are collected.
Types of materials: All formats are collected, including selected archival and photographic material, but the emphasis is on printed books, journals and printed ephemeral materials.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS:
The emphasis of collecting is on the historical and social aspects of sports and not on practical how-to literature. Most Notre Dame-related non-print materials are housed in the University Archives which is responsible for archival collections in all formats relating to sports at Notre Dame.
