Researching Spanish and Latin American Literature
The Notre Dame Library has a good collection of works by Brazilian, Latin American, Portuguese, and Spanish writers. You will find works by all of the major authors writing in Spanish and Portuguese. We also have critical articles and books about these authors.
Aleph Search Tips
The following tips for searching our online catalog, Aleph, will help you to quickly find criticism about an author.
- Finding criticism about an author –Under keyword choose “subject keywords” and enter the author’s name and the term “criticism”. Example: “cervantes criticism”.
- Finding criticism about a particular work by an author – Under keyword choose “subject keywords” and enter the author’s name and a word found in the title of the work. Example: “cervantes quixote”
- Finding works on the same topic – You can use a book that you find in Aleph to see if there are other books on the same topic. When you look at the full record of a book in Aleph, go to the subjects. If you find one that interests you, click on that subject to see other books with the same subject heading.
Bibliographies
There has been a long tradition published books filled with the citations to works by and critical works about a particular author. We have many of these for the most important Spanish language writers.

Publishing
Literary works are published in print in a number of ways. A famous work, such as Don Quixote, will be available in numerous editions, critical editions containing essays and notes about the work; translations, and selected chapters published in collections of works. Editions, critical editions, and translations will be shelved together. Collections using portions of Don Quixote may be shelved in other areas, depending on the topic of the work.

Editions – Popular works are often published more than once. For important writers, we usually have several editions, which mean a lot of copies.

- Anthologies – These collections often include selected stories. A keyword search in Aleph may find a short story that you need to read in such an anthology.
- Complete Works – Many of the authors that you read have had all of their works brought together and published as obras completas.
Reference Works
Reference works provide useful information about writers and literature. The information is brief and easy to read.
- Dictionaries – The library owns many Spanish dictionaries. You can browse our holdings in the Reference area under the call number PC 4820. You can find online Spanish dictionaries under “Research Tools: Dictionaries” http://www.library.nd.edu/subjects/language_and_literature_spanish_and_portuguese
- Twayne’s World Authors Series - The Twayne series provides undergraduates will good introductory works on important Spanish and Latin American authors.

- Literature Resource Center – This online source provides biographical, bibliographical, and critical content on literary figures from all time periods; draws on Gale Group's Contemporary Authors, Contemporary Literary Criticism, and Dictionary of Literary Biography; includes full text of numerous literary journals and periodicals.

Article Indexes and Abstracts
There are many more scholarly articles than scholarly books available to you. They are more difficult to find since they are published within journals. Fortunately, the most important journals are included in the following article indexes, so that you can find the articles that are appropriate to your assignment.
MLA International Bibliography
Coverage: 1963-
Description: Provides indexing to literature, language, linguistics, and folklore in nearly 2,000 journals and series as well as covering relevant monographs, working papers, proceedings, bibliographies, etc.
This is the most important index for Spanish and Latin American literature.
Hispanic American Periodical Index
Description: Provides access to tables of contents for hundreds of journals, primarily in the humanities and social sciences, published in Latin America; Web database with search by journal and article and browse by country.
Bibliografía de la Literatura Española desde 1980
Description: Provides citations to publications appearing in all languages on Spanish literature, literary theory, and literary genres from books, periodical articles, critical editions of literary works, book reviews, bibliographies, and conference proceedings.
Call number location - Books are placed on the shelf by the Library of Congress call number they are given. A writer’s works and the criticism of those works are placed together. Along with searching Aleph, our online catalog, to find books and journals, it is a good idea to browse the shelf to see what is available.
