An examination of the manuscript of a musical work can yield unique insights into and knowledge of both the work in question and the composer thereof. Aside from the visceral feeling at viewing the composer's own hand and seeing the manner in which works were composed, many objective facts can be gleaned from such research.

Few libraries have the funds and facilities to make the acquisition of original manuscripts a priority. Most that have done so started their collections in the mid-19th or early-20th century or gathered the collections of private collectors who had begun amassing musical manuscripts centuries before that. In the University of Notre Dame Libraries, however, we are blessed by having access to wonderful copies of composers' manuscripts. These copies are of two types: facsimiles--i.e., printed reproductions that reveal every aspect--color, line, erasures, etc., of an original manuscript at its original size--and microform copies. Examples of each are noted below.

To locate all of the collections of manuscripts that include works by more than one composer, enter music manuscripts in the Browse Subject search in ALEPH:

To locate the manuscripts of a single composer, enter the name of the composer (in the "authorized" version of the catalog) and the word Manuscripts in the search in ALEPH:

Facsimiles of music manuscripts:
Most, but not all, of the printed facsimiles are classified in ML96.4 (for collections) and ML96.5 (for works by a single composer). They are characterized by beautiful reproductions that go as far as (in many cases) attempting to recreate the "feel" of the original paper. The following are a few examples of some very beautiful facsimiles. There are many more.

The microform reproductions are especially valuable in that they can combine many manuscripts together in one place for comparison. Although reproduced in back-and-white and missing the "touch" of the printed facsimiles, the clarity and completeness of these sets is amazing.
