Diversity Program - University Libraries and Kresge Law Library

hesburgh libraryIn the next decade, librarians will be in short supply as retirements peak and the demographics simultaneously shift to a predominantly non-white population. As a response to this issue, the University Libraries and the Kresge Law Library partnered to create diversity programming.  Established in 2000, the flagship initiative is the Librarian-in- Residence Program, a desirable opportunity among academic library residencies.

During the 2001/2002 academic year, the Diversity Committee developed the idea of employing diverse local high school students as student assistants during the summer. The Summer Program was implemented during the summer of 2002, partially funded by a grant from LAMA, the Library Administrators and Managers Association of the American Library Association (ALA).  In its final shape, the Summer Program provided employment to five culturally or ethnically diverse area students who intend to go to college following high school graduation.  In their roles as student assistants in several departments within the university and law libraries, they were introduced to many aspects of academic librarianship.
