Faculty Document Delivery Service
Our Service
We provide next day delivery of books and photocopies of articles from the Hesburgh Libraries to Notre Dame faculty.
Unfortunately, we cannot deliver materials in such formats as videocassette, compact disc, audiocassette and other non-paper formats, and of course, we cannot deliver items from such non-circulating collections as Special Collections and Reserve.
How to Request Document Delivery?
Search the Notre Dame online catalog and locate the book or issue of the journal containing the article you would like delivered to you. Then go to the library's Interlibrary loan and document delivery site and logon with your net ID and password.
The first two request forms on the screen: Document Delivery Article and Document Delivery Book are the DocDel forms. Fill out the required form(s) and submit.
Where will the material be delivered?
Where material is delivered depends on your department and on the delivery information in your ILL registration. If you are a member of an Arts & Letters department, material goes to your mailbox in the departmental office. If you are a member of the Science Department and you indicate a Branch Library as your pickup location you will receive materials at the circulation desk of that Branch.
If you have any questions, call Karen Malling at 631-5758 or email her at kferry@nd.edu.
Articles are posted to the web unless you indicate a preference for paper copies, in which case they will be delivered to departmental offices or branch libraries.
Frequently Asked Questions
If I have a big research project and I order a large number of items at one time, will I receive them all the next day?
Our goal is to deliver all requests placed Monday through Friday by the next business day; however, we may have to limit the requests we fill for one patron when DocDel traffic is exceptionally busy.
What happens if the book I request or a journal volume from which I need a photocopy is not on the shelf?
If a journal volume from which you need a photocopy is not found on the shelf, we will get the article for you via Interlibrary Loan.
If the book is not on the shelf or if its checked out to another patron, we will order the book for you via Interlibrary Loan. Most items we borrow on ILL have a loan period of 30 days, and we will include a note indicating that, if you need the title long-term, you should recall or put a search on the Hesburgh Library copy.
What do I do if I enter my Net ID and access is denied?
If access is denied, contact the Document Delivery Department (631-8727) or Karen Malling (631-5758; kferry@nd.edu).
If I have a research assistant, can I authorize him or her to use the document delivery service?
Yes, we have a proxy policy. Faculty must first obtain a proxy card from the Hesburgh Library circulation desk, then email DocDel (docdeliv.1@nd.edu or Karen Malling kferry@nd.edu) letting them know whom is being authorized as a proxy. When these steps are completed, the proxy's Net ID will be added to the database, so he or she can access the online forms.
Faculty can authorize a research assistant to order both Interlibrary Loan and DocDel materials for him or her.
