Acceptable Use Policy

The core collection for Medieval Studies is the Medieval Institute Collection which occupies most of the 7th floor of the Hesburgh Library. The concentration of some 100,000 specialized volumes around a staffed reading room is a signal aspect of this collection, making it an outstanding facility which has long attracted researchers from all over the world. In addition to major reference works and primary source collections, the Medieval Institute Reference Collection of over 21,000 volumes includes the celebrated Astrik L. Gabriel History of Universities Collection, the extensive Manuscript Studies Collection, as well as support materials for the Ambrosiana Collection. That collection of microfilms and photographs of manuscripts from the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan is also housed on the 7th floor, together with the microfilm section of the History of Universities Collection. Medieval manuscripts, incunabula and rare books relevant to Medieval Studies are preserved in the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections, on the 1st floor. Access to a large number of specialized electronic resources (see below) is provided by the Libraries to users associated with the University of Notre Dame, and some additional resources relevant to Medieval Studies are scattered throughout the Hesburgh Library according to subject matter. This is the list of Medieval Studies resources which are currently highlighted on our website. Please note that this is not the complete list of resources in this area which the library owns or to which it has access. Access to these resources is governed by license agreements which restrict use to the Notre Dame community and to individuals who use the Notre Dame Libraries' facilities.   A collection of approximately 1,000,000 incipits covering all known Latin texts, in manuscript form, from the start of Latin literature to around 1500 A.D. This includes ancient, patristic, medieval, and humanist literature and covers all genres: theology and liberal arts, history and poetry, medicine and liturgy, civil and canon law, exact and occult sciences, summons and sermons, glossaries and correspondences, cooking recipies and cursing formulas, large and small treatises, even isolated sentences.   Based on The index of Christian art, a thematic and iconographic index of early Christian and medieval art objects to 1400 begun at Princeton University in 1917. The database contains records of works indexed by the archive since 1991. No images are presently available. Usage info: Licensed for 6 simultaneous users.

  Coverage:

  Indexes articles, notes, and similar literature on medieval subjects in journals, Festschriften, conference proceedings, and collected essays. Covers all aspects of medieval studies within the date range of 400 to 1500 for the entire continent of Europe, the Middle East and North Africa for the period before the Muslim conquest and parts of those areas subsequently controlled by Christian powers.
