Resources in this area include works which are characterized by the rational investigation of the truths and principles of being, knowledge, or conduct, and tools facilitating access to them. As a discipline, the subject may be divided into the following categories: aesthetics, epistemology, ethics, logic, and metaphysics. Most of the printed materials in this area are cataloged in the B, BC-BD, BH, and BJ parts of the Library of Congress classification system.

Access to these resources is governed by license agreements which restrict use to the Notre Dame community and to individuals who use the Notre Dame Libraries' facilities. This includes ancient, patristic, medieval, and humanist literature and covers all genres: theology and liberal arts, history and poetry, medicine and liturgy, civil and canon law, exact and occult sciences, summons and sermons, glossaries and correspondences, cooking recipies and cursing formulas, large and small treatises, even isolated sentences.
