Researching early American history just became easier! With the acquisition by the University Libraries of two major digital collections, Early American Imprints and Early American Newspapers, 1690-1876  Notre Dame students and faculty now have access to thousands of early American primary sources from their computer desktops.

EARLY AMERICAN IMPRINTS

Early American Imprints consist of two major parts, Early American Imprints, Series I: Evans(1639-1800) which is complete and Early American Imprints, Series II: Shaw-Shoemaker (1801-1819) which as of May 31, 2005 contains content  published through 1808.  The collections contain lengthy monographs as well as shorter pamphlets, which allow the user to search the full-text by keyword(s). Words used in the searches are highlighted. In addition to keyword searching one can search by genre, subject, author, history of printing, place of publication and language.

EARLY AMERICAN NEWSPAPERS

Early American Newspapers, 1690-1876 features cover-to-cover reproductions of hundreds of historic newspapers, providing more than one million keyword searchable pages.  The user can search individual newspapers or the complete collection. Searches can be limited by types of items such as advertisements, matrimonial notices, death notices and shipping news as well as by date. Keywords used in the search are highlighted within the text.

These databases both feature persistent URLs at the page and article level, so that items can be easily embedded in syllabi and web pages.
