IUPUI Field Trip

IDeA Meeting:

IUPUI Library Institutional Repository project Institutional repository team:
Kevin, Mark, Kristi were present; Amy, Robin and Emily unable to join

Some big ideas:

  • self deposit of materials with metadata tool to count and present metadate as part of the ingest process
  • marketing--the IDeA team noted the importance of follow-up to marketing and relationship building initiatives
  • Establish a checklist for creative commons license so those inputting their materials will know better how to license their materials
  • those who are deposting materials may deposit once into the repository, but map to many communities
  • identify green journal publications and 'license back' the content to aloow depositors to hold a copy in the repository
  • the 'e' in IDeA doesn't stand for anything in particular. :)
  • see https://idea.iupui.edu/ for more information

Copyright Meeting
Kenneth Crews

Copyright for IR comes down to publishing agreements v. ownership--answering the question: Who owns the content?

One suggestion is to ask the person submitting the material "Are you sure you own the rights?" The role of an IR operator versus a publisher is a way of approaching the problem of copyright and institutional repositories Additioanl items for a checklist of materials upon submission:

  • content:
    • did you create it?
    • did you create it alone?
    • were there any assistants who contributed to your research?
  • attribution and permission may need to be obtained
  • Are there any other publishing arrangements for this expression of your idea, research, etc.? Please attach or provide a copy.

Decide where you (institution) will or can take risks.

Provide non-exclusive license attachment for the faculty member to submit with their documentation to a publisher. See the University of Kansas for an example of such an open access statement that helps the institution / faculty member retain some rights of usage upon publication

Of highest importance is education and fostering awareness of these copyright issues. see: www.copyright.iupui.edu for more information.
