This is believed to be the earliest of the series of elaborately illuminated texts of the Apocalypse produced in Britain during the thirteenth century. It was probably made for Queen Eleanor, wife of Henry III. The text and the commentary (an abbreviated version of that written by Berengaudus -- also known as Pseudo-Ambrose -- in the early twelfth century) are both in French. The miniatures reflect the serene tone of this commentary, which stresses the glory of the Second Coming of Christ, rather than the terrors that will precede it.
