In view of its size and of the large script, the Utrecht Psalter was probably intended as a choir book, used by several monks chanting together from a common book resting on a lectern. The regular and repetitive recittion of the psalms would have been the first introduction to the Latin language for most young people, especially those destined for the clerical or monastic life.
