Pope Gregory the Great composing his exegetical works, which Peter the Deacon attested were communicated directly to Gregory by the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove. According to the story told by Paul the Deacon (no relation) in his life of Gregory, Peter sat behind a curtain taking dictation from Gregory (lower right). Curious about noises coming from the other side of the curtain, he peeked through a gap (lower left) to see a brilliantly white dove sitting on Gregory's shoulder whispering in his ear.
