The Medieval Institute Reading Room
Medieval Institute reading room collections do not circulate and may
be consulted during library hours. Materials
may only be removed from the reading room for photocopying at the discretion
of the reading room supervisor. The library catalogue as well as most
of the Medieval Institute Library's electronic databases may be accessed
from the network terminal in the main reading room. For more extended
research involving library databases, there are network terminals available
in the Ambrosiana reference area.
In addition to the main reading room, the Medieval Institute Library
has two smaller reading rooms. One is devoted to paleography and contains
most of the Institute Library's holdings in the Z call number range. It
also contains an excellent collection of medieval manuscript facsimiles.
The other reading room contains the
Astrik L Gabriel Universities Collection. This includes materials
pertaining to the history of education from late antiquity through the
early modern period with special strengths in the early history of universities.

The Medieval Institute Library's reference resources are too numerous
to list in their entirety. We have provided here a brief list of the most
important sets and items in the main reading room. All materials in the
reading room are shelved in call number order. Recent acquisitions are
shelved in range 17.
