Fellowships for Short-Term Travel to Collections
The Department of Rare Books and Special Collections at the University of Notre Dame offers support to researchers who wish to consult our collections. Priority will be given to projects that require access to original materials and where the University of Notre Dame collections are integral to the proposed research topic. Applications are welcome from individuals requiring the use of any of our materials, but requests in the fields of Catholic Theology, Medieval Studies, Dante and Early Modern Italian Studies, Irish Studies and Latin American Studies will receive special consideration.
Deadline: None; applications are considered upon submission throughout the year until the annual $5,000 funding is expended.
Eligibility: Faculty and advanced graduate students whose research would benefit from on-site access to the collections. Applicants must reside at least 100 miles from Notre Dame and need to remain in residence, researching on the department material, for at least five consecutive weekdays. Some restrictions apply to non-US citizens (Please see application process below). Stipends range from $250 up to $1500, depending on travel expenses and the length of stay.
Application:
Interested parties should submit the following:
- A cover letter which briefly explains the nature of the proposed research, proposed dates, estimated cost of travel and lodging and contact information (including an e-mail address can greatly speed up the process)
- For non US residents: photocopies of Visa and supporting documents. (Please note that we are unable to reimburse B2 Visa holders. Applicants with an F1 Visa must have an employment authorization card and B1 Visa holders are eligible for reimbursement of travel expenses. Applicants with a J1 Visa can be fully reimbursed for any travel or lodging expenses.)
These materials should be mailed together to:
