Biographical Information

Bernardino Rivadavia was a leading politician of the Unitarist movement that attempted to unify the young Argentine republic with power centralized in Buenos Aires. He took part in the independence movement and led early efforts to form a national government. As the first national president (1826-1827), he promoted European liberal ideals that were extremely unpopular with the interior provinces. The opposition to his policies forced his resignation and Argentina would not have a national president for another generation.

The archive contains one letter dated 1824 in which Rivadavia announces the appointment of General Juan Gregorio Las Heras as governor of the Province of Buenos Aires. He thanks the officials of the Ministerio de Hacienda for their support and careful attention towards the nation's institutions.
