The Latin American, Spanish, and Spanish Colonial Collections

The Department of Special Collections holds several collections that document various aspects of Spanish and Latin American literature, history and culture from the the Spanish Colonial era to the present. Collection strengths include:

• Early chronicles of European discovery and Peruvian intellectual and cultural history (Library of José Durand).

• Activities and history of the Inquisition in Spain, Portugal, and the New World (Inquisition Collection).

• 19th- and early 20th-century historical texts from Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay (Southern Cone History Collection).

• Late 19th- and 20th-century literature from Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay (Southern Cone Literature Collection).

• 20th-century literature from the Hispanic Caribbean nations of Cuba, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. (Hispanic Caribbean Literature Collection).

• The most complete private collection of Dariona in the world, including the first editions and following variant editions of Nicaraguan poet Rubén Darío's books (The Alfonso Vijil Collection on Rubén Darío).
