The Joyce Sports Research Collection is an extensive body of books, periodicals, printed ephemera, manuscripts, and other formats dedicated to American sports and physical culture, and their antecedents abroad. Most materials pre-date the 1970s. The book collection, numbering upwards of 3000 volumes, includes many of the field's scarce and seminal titles, while periodical holdings range from The Sporting Magazine (London, 1792-1871) to the four mid-20th century American magazines titled, confusingly, Sports Illustrated. But perhaps the greatest strength of the Joyce Collection lies in its tens of thousands of pieces of printed ephemera—record books, rulebooks, media guides, programs, scorecards, catalogs, and the like. There are also manuscript holdings, and several important collections of photographs. Among the topical collections of particular importance are those devoted to boxing, wrestling, American football, billiards, and golf. The Joyce Collection functions as a resource for scholarly, journalistic, and grass-roots research; inquiries are always welcome, and may be directed to the curator of the collection, George Rugg (contact information below). Please note: materials specifically relating to Notre Dame athletics are held not in the Joyce Collection but in University Archives, 607 Hesburgh Library; patrons interested in utilizing such materials should contact Archives at (574) 631-6448 (email archives@nd.edu).

Finding Aids to Joyce Collection Materials

Joyce Collection materials may be searched in two ways: through the Hesburgh Libraries Online Catalog (ALEPH), and through the six "Subject Area Guides" linked below. Neither, at this point, will provide comprehensive results. Most books, and an increasing number of periodical titles, have catalog records in ALEPH; most of the printed ephemera and other formats do not. The guides listed below contain finding aids to many materials not yet included in ALEPH, and should be consulted by researchers interested in these subject areas, to ensure that important resources are not overlooked. Guides for a number of other subject areas will be added as completed; these will include General Athletics, the Olympic Games, Golf, Physical Culture, and Sports Journalism.
