Recalls
Recalls let you get an item someone else has on loan.
- The current borrower has 14 days to return the item.
- You will be notified by email or mail when the item is available to check out.
- The item will be held for 10 days at the delivery point you requested.
- You can check out the item for the normal loan period. (If more than one person recalls the item, each person will be able to borrow it for 2 weeks.)
Periodicals are not recalled as they only circulate for two days. Instead, place a Hold at a Circulation Desk.
To place a recall:
- Identify the book you want in the Library Catalog (Use Basic or Advanced Search).
- Click "Recall item" next to the Owned/Checked out statement. This will display a list of volumes or copies in a new window.
- Click the "Recall" link next to the copy or volume you want to recall.
- Enter your ID Barcode Number (the 14-digit number on the reverse side of your Notre Dame ID card) and your Verification Number (initially MMDD of your birthday; e.g. 1225 for December 25)
- From the Recall Request window,
- Select the library where you want to pick up the book.
- Optionally, set the "Not Needed After" date. (Do NOT set the date for less than 15 days. If the book is returned after this date, you will not be notified.)
- Click "Go."
- When you are finished press the "Reset" button to logout. Failure to logout may allow others to view your personal information.
Or, go to a Circulation Desk and ask for the item be recalled.
If you receive a recall request:
- The item is due on or before the new due date listed on the notice.
- Materials recalled to be put on Reserve must be returned immediately.
- If you don't return an item that has been recalled, or return it late:
- Fines for a recalled item that is not returned after 30 days start at $25 (non-refundable) and include the cost of replacing the book.
- Non-refundable fines accrue on overdue recalled items even if you are away from campus. We strongly recommend you return all library materials before leaving town.
