Understanding Library of Congress Call Numbers

  1. The ND Library uses the Library of Congress call number system, an alphabetical arrangement of books by initial letters. e.g.:
    D
    271
    .H78
    DA
    28
    .M29
    DB
    805
    .C721
    DC
    62
    .L5
--Alphabetical order    (single letters precede double letters)
  2. Within a given alphabetical group (or classification), books are sub-arranged by numerical order. e.g.:
  3. DA

    .M9
    DA
    79
    .G24

    .B29
    --Numerical order (whole numbers)
  4. Books are further sub-arranged by the next set of letters and numbers. This number is preceded by a decimal. e.g.:
  5. DA

    .K21
    DA
    289
    .L513
    DA

    .M37
    --Decimal numbers

Notes: 1. In the library's computer catalog, call numbers are written out in one line. Example: DA28.M9
