Learn how to explore, create, move, and search files in the command line.

Ever wonder why the hackers on TV never use their mouse? In this workshop, we’ll cover the basics of navigating your computer using only your keyboard—or, more specifically, using Unix commands in the command line.

After this workshop, you will be able to:

  1. Navigate through your files and folders using Unix commands.
  2. Create, copy, move, delete, and manipulate files and folders using Unix commands.
  3. Edit files using the Nano text editor in the command line.
  4. Search a text file using regular expressions.

No experience necessary. Please bring a laptop if you wish to follow along. If you will be using a Windows machine, please install Git for Windows before the workshop and reach out to the instructor if you run into any issues.
