103 Hesburgh Library, Rare Books and Special Collections

This workshop is a skills-based introduction to the handwriting of early modern England, primarily secretary hand - the most common script in England from the 16th-17th centuries.

This workshop is a short, two-hour introduction to the handwriting and written culture of early modern England (16th-17th centuries), primarily focusing on the script known as "secretary hand." The ability to read secretary hand, the most common script in Tudor, Stuart, and Georgian England, is an essential skill for any who wish to work with manuscripts of the early modern English period. Attendees will receive a brief introduction to the history, culture, and letter forms of secretary hand as well as hands-on experience with real early modern manuscripts from the Hesburgh Library's own collection. Prior experience with paleography and manuscripts will be beneficial but is not required.
