Introduction to R for Social Data Analysis

Tuesday, March 1, 2022

1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

264 Hesburgh Library, Technology Commons

This introductory workshop will demonstrate some of the capabilities of R and RStudio for basic data manipulation and analysis, focusing on the interface of the software, and subsetting and visualizing data.

Conclusions drawn from data are constantly being used to make decisions that impact our day-to-day lives. Our own understanding of the social world, as well as that of others, can be enhanced through data analysis which requires an ability to clean, manipulate, and communicate using data. In this workshop, participants will be introduced to R (Studio) as a tool for data analytics. This introductory session requires no prior working knowledge of R (Studio).

Participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the working interface of R Studio, assign values and names to objects (vectors), and conduct basic calculations using functions
  2. Manipulate dataframe using dplyr package and construct basic plots using ggplot2 package
