Virtual Introduction to Web Scraping Part I

Wednesday, April 22, 2020

3:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Zoom Meeting

Workshop Overview

This two-part workshop will introduce attendees to web scraping — a technique used to automate extracting data from websites.

Part I Objectives

  1. What is web scraping and why is it useful?
  2. How can I select content on a web page using a specific tool (XPath)?
  3. How can I use browser extensions/other web tools to quickly scrape data off a web page?

Prerequisites

All are welcome to attend, although some familiarity with HTML/XML will be helpful — as web scraping is a technique to extract data from web pages, it requires some understanding of the technologies that are used to display information on the web. This lesson therefore assumes that attendees will have some familiarity with HTML and the Document Object Model (DOM).
