Virtual Introduction to Web Scraping Part II

Wednesday, April 29, 2020

3:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Zoom Meeting

Workshop Overview

This two-part workshop will introduce attendees to web scraping — a technique used to automate extracting data from websites.

Part two of the web scraping workshop will introduce the use of specialized libraries to scrape websites by writing custom computer programs. Some familiarity with the Python programming language and object-oriented programming is useful for participation.

Part II Objectives

  1. Web scraping using Python and Scrapy
  2. Ethical and legal questions about web scraping

Prerequisites

All are welcome to attend, although some familiarity with HTML/XML will be helpful — as web scraping is a technique to extract data from web pages, it requires some understanding of the technologies that are used to display information on the web. This lesson therefore assumes that attendees will have some familiarity with HTML and the Document Object Model (DOM).
