Session 1 Workshop Overview

This workshop introduces participants to the Unix shell. Participants will understand the basics of the Unix shell and will learn how to use shell commands to work with directories and files.

Objectives

1. Explain the basics of the Unix shell
2. Explain why and how to use the command line
3. Use shell commands to navigate the file system and work with directories and files
4. Use tab completion to limit typing

No prior experience required. But please bring your laptop.

If you’re already comfortable manipulating files and directories at the command line, you may want to take Unix Shell 3 and 4 on February 5.

To complete this lesson, you will need a UNIX-like shell environment (see Setup). You will also need to download and extract the file "shell-lesson.zip" from GitHub. Once you have unzipped and extracted the file, you should end up with a folder called “shell-lesson”.
