carta ejecutoria de hidalguía, or Executory Certificate of Nobility, was a Spanish legal document that certified an individual's hidalgo (lower noble) status. Popular between the 16th and 18th centuries, these illuminated documents served as visual symbols of economic wealth and social standing. To understand the material significance of a carta ejecutoria belonging to don Alonso de Resa, a team of scientists and conservators used two analytical techniques — X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDX) — to analyze different colored samples. Since each color reacted differently to these techniques, they produced their own spectra, or unique wavelength patterns. With the support of the ND Physics Department, Art History graduate Rocío Colón Cotto utilized these patterns to propose likely identifications for two red pigments in the carta ejecutoria. Integrating a materials science approach, this exhibit explores how this certificate materially communicates hidalgo nobility.

This exhibit is curated by Art History graduate Rocío Colón Cotto. This and other exhibits within the Hesburgh Libraries are generously supported by the McBrien Special Collections Endowment.

All exhibits are free and open to the public during business hours.
