Event: Data Cleaning with OpenRefine

Thursday, November 17, 2022

2:30 pm - 4:30 pm

Virtual via Zoom

A part of the data workflow is preparing the data for analysis. Some of this involves data cleaning, where errors in the data are identified and corrected or formatting made consistent. This step must be taken with the same care and attention to reproducibility as the analysis.

OpenRefine (formerly Google Refine) is a powerful free and open-source tool for working with messy data: cleaning it and transforming it from one format into another.

This lesson will teach you to use OpenRefine to effectively clean and format data and automatically track any changes that you make.

This lesson assumes no prior knowledge of the skills or tools.

Please follow these instructions to install OpenRefine and download the example data file before the session.

Virtual workshop: A URL to join the Zoom session will be emailed to you approximately one hour before the workshop start time. To ensure access to the workshop from the virtual waiting room, your Zoom name should match the information provided when registering for the workshop.

Open to Undergraduates, Graduate Students, Faculty, Staff, Postdocs
