This is a 3-part demo and discussion series about building VR environments for an entry-level user. Participants will discuss the concepts and skills that a potential VR developer will need to consider in order to stage success.
The series will define three “tiers” of VR use.
Tier 1 – Viewing Tier 2 – Navigation Tier 3 – Reaction/Manipulation
Demonstrations will be done using Unity to prep an HMD environment using Oculus hardware.
Prior to beginning any VR projects, developers need to understand their resource limitations and to define (and maintain) a projects scope.
Tier 2: Navigation (Ghost) Used when one needs to navigate or “walk” a larger environment (either harvested or modeled). Safety is of primary concern. Users experiencing a “room scale” environment will wish to walk naturally. Users exploring an area through directional controller (i.e. joysticks) will likely stay more stable. Key constraint would be the “playable” area. Must include head position (height) variation. Hand tracking becomes optional with audio stimuli becoming beneficial.
This workshop is open to all graduate students and postdocs.

As Digital Projects Specialist, Adam contributes significantly to the development, creation, supervision, planning, and ongoing management of digital collections within the Hesburgh Libraries. Adam provides oversight for the development of three-dimensional services, including 3D printers, software modeling and evaluation of applications that emerge in support of the 3D field as the technologies apply to strategic initiatives within the Libraries. Adam also provides instructional outreach service/course integration as well as workshops and instruction on 3D modeling and other visual software applications, including VR.
