Opening Hours
The library is open at all times when Marian Kennedy Fischer Hall open, and is designed to be largely self-service using a self-check-out system. See building hours.
Catalogue
The Notre Dame London Library catalogue is available. Please contact Ms. Tyrell if you have any difficulties using the catalogue, or need resources you cannot find.
Research Assistance
Ms. Tyrell is available to help you with your research. Please come by the Librarian's Office, email Ms. Tyrell, or call 020 74847839. Information on external libraries is also available.
Support for Faculty
Graduate students and Notre Dame faculty members coming to London for any reason are invited to contact the Notre Dame London Librarian, Alice Tyrell, who will be happy to offer support and advice on accessing collections in London and the UK for your research.
London-based adjunct faculty are also welcome to contact the Notre Dame London Librarian, Alice Tyrell, for any advice needed in making full use of the electronic resources of the University's Hesburgh Libraries in the support of both their teaching at Notre Dame in London, and their own research. Services such as interlibrary loan delivery of journal articles and book chapters, e-journal access and e-reserves for course readings are available.
Study Space
The NDL Library provides a substantial number of study spaces, all wired for power and networking. In the library itself, the main room, to your left as you enter the library, is designed for quiet social study, and the right-hand reading room for silent study. The annex outside room 3.05 is also designated for quiet social study. Law students have priority on the use of the carrels in this area.
There are four study offices on the 4th floor which are ideal for group work (rooms 4.16, 4.17, 4.18 and 4.19.) Booked study rooms online, up to two weeks ahead.
You can also take advantage of classrooms, when they are not in use, and the student common areas. The Piccadilly Room is reserved for the exclusive use of Law students.
Reference and Circulating Material
Books marked with Reference, and Do Not Check Out labels should be used only in the library. Everything else, including DVDs, CDs, Travel, Oversize, London Focus and London Fiction can be borrowed. The loan period for all material is one week.
Newspapers and Journals
The NDL Library takes six weekday national papers, including both the broadsheet and the tabloid press, as well as The Tablet, The Economist, and Plays International. Copies are kept for two weeks. For back issues beyond that date, students are advised to consult the Westminster Reference Library on Leicester Square. Newspapers and journals must not be removed from the Library.
Students and faculty have access to almost all the electronic journals that they would have on campus, via the Hesburgh Libraries. Be sure to start your searches from the Hesburgh Libraries' website so that you are prompted for your NetID and password to gain access.
If you need an article that is only available from a print journal held on campus, we have an arrangement with the Interlibrary Loan Department of the Hesburgh Libraries to provide electronic copies. Log in to place your requests, and select delivery method 'electronic' and the collection location as London.
Interlibrary Loan
In addition to the arrangements for Interlibrary Loan access to journals described above, the NDL Library also has an agreement with the historic London Library to provide local Interlibrary Loan access to their collections.
Students may consult the London Library catalogue online, and request two volumes at a time by emailing Ms. Tyrell with the details.
If the book is available at the London Library, we aim to provide a next-working-day turn around. London Library books are loaned to students for one week, and can be renewed once. If an item is not available via Interlibrary Loan, Ms. Tyrell will advise on alternative sources.
Printing, photocopying, and scanning
There are two multi-function machines in the NDL Library, as well as machines on the 4th floor, and in the Basement level of Fischer Hall, and in the study areas of Fischer Hall. Scanning to email or to a USB drive is freely available. Printing and photocopying count against your London printing quota. Please see the London IT information for details of how to use these devices.
Audio Visual Material
CDs and DVDs can be checked out using the self-check stations, and are loaned for one week. The majority of DVD holdings are Region 2, and students may have to alter the settings on their laptops for the discs to play. Students can also use any computer in the building, including those in empty classrooms to watch DVDs. Please report any problems using these machines to our IT Coordinator Rich Jervis, so they can be resolved.
In addition, there are portable DVD players and DVD drives available to borrow from the front desk at Conway Hall for all Conway Hall residents.
