Members of the University of Notre Dame community now have access to Emerald eJournals Premier.

The subscription allows students and researchers access to the entire Emerald catalog of more than 300 journals, many of which are top-cited in their fields. This access includes publications such as the “Journal of Research in International Marketing,” “Journal of Knowledge Management,” and “International Journal of Operations and Production Management.”

“The Hesburgh Libraries have long provided access to a wide range of research materials in all disciplines—but there is always opportunity for improvement,” Mark Robison, department head, Academic Collections and Services, said. “This subscription provides immediate, seamless access where users formerly hit barriers.”

Prior to gaining access to Emerald’s eJournals Premier package, the Hesburgh Libraries only subscribed to one of the publisher's journals.

“We know this effort is already paying off,” Robison said. “The aggregated monthly usage data shows that Notre Dame students and faculty have been accessing 400+ Emerald articles on average per month since the subscription began.”

According to Robison, Emerald publishes several highly cited journals in business fields such as management, marketing, accounting, and supply chain management. In addition, they also cover other subject areas that are particularly significant to students and researchers at Notre Dame.

“Emerald is not as old as many other publishers, but it has consistently grown in prominence in recent years,” he said. “Students and researchers in the Mendoza College of Business are the biggest beneficiaries of this access, due to the outsized amount of business content in Emerald’s portfolio. Of course, several other departments and institutes across campus will also benefit, including those working in engineering, psychology, peace studies, and education.”

The subscription to Emerald will last for 12 months, after which the Libraries will assess its status.

“Like many initiatives at the Hesburgh Libraries, our users’ input will be crucial to our long-term decision making about this subscription,” Robison said. “Feedback from administrators, faculty members, and others would help us build a fuller understanding and a stronger rationale for ongoing financial support for Emerald’s content.”

Members of the Notre Dame community can easily access Emerald’s articles both directly from the publisher’s website and through Hesburgh Libraries’ OneSearch tool.
