Hesburgh Libraries Year in Review 2018

The Hesburgh Libraries held the first annual Year In Review meeting to recognize and celebrate the many contributions made to the library profession over the last academic year.

In addition to strategic initiatives and research projects that benefit the academy, there is also a tremendous amount of original research and scholarship taking place to advance the library profession. Hesburgh Libraries’ faculty and staff collectively made over 140 contributions which include authoring books, chapters and articles; serving as conference presenters, panelists and conveners, and more.

Notable honorees were Doug Archer, peace studies, global affairs and political science librarian, and Thurston Miller, chemistry and physics librarian. Archer received the 2018 Freedom to Read Foundation Roll of Honor Award. Miller received the 2018 Special Library Association’s (SLA) Physics - Astronomy - Mathematics Achievement Award and University of Notre Dame’s Rev. Paul J. Foik Award.

In addition, two library faculty released new books. Marcy Simons, organizational development librarian, authored “Academic Library Metamorphosis and Regeneration” published by Rowman & Littlefield. John Wang, associate university librarian authored, “Supply Chain Management for Collection Services of Academic Libraries” published by Chandos Publishing.

"All of these impressive efforts happen largely behind the scenes in addition to daily work that supports the research and study of students and faculty,” said Diane Parr Walker, Edward H. Arnold University Librarian. “We wanted to recognize and celebrate these contributions that expand professional growth, increase organizational knowledge and, at the broadest level, influence the direction and impact of the library profession overall.”
