Hesburgh Libraries offers The Atlantic to Notre Dame community

Students, faculty and staff at the University of Notre Dame now have online access to award-winning, in-depth journalism from The Atlantic thanks to a university-wide subscription through the Hesburgh Libraries.

"We're excited to launch this subscription to The Atlantic's website and add to the growing list of popular magazines and newspapers to which Hesburgh Libraries has a digital, institutional subscription,” Mark Robison, department head, Academic Collection & Services, said.

The Atlantic — founded in 1857 in Boston as The Atlantic Monthly — features articles on politics, foreign affairs, business and the economy, culture and arts, and technology and science. In recent years, the magazine has won several Pulitzer Prizes for its feature writing, as well as the American Society of Magazine Editors award for general excellence.

“With the library's subscription, Notre Dame students and employees can read all Atlantic articles directly on the magazine's website. This includes The Atlantic's trove of ‘web-only’ articles, previously unavailable through library databases,” Robison said. “A bonus of this subscription is that users can access The Atlantic's complete archives, all the way back to 1857. Users can browse these back issues by year, or search their full text.”

Robison noted that prior to making The Atlantic subscription available campus-wide, data from the publication indicated that nearly 200 Notre Dame employees and students were paying for private subscriptions to the site.

“This new institutional subscription saves our users money and provides a perfect illustration of the library's power to leverage joint funds for the common good,” he said.

The Atlantic is the latest addition to a growing list of subscriptions that the Hesburgh Libraries subscribe to directly rather than through a third-party vendor. Other publications on the list include the New York TimesWall Street Journal, Financial Times, and Foreign Policy.

“For both its current and historical value, this new subscription will open many new opportunities for engaging with The Atlantic's rigorous and thought-provoking journalism," Robison said.

Members of the Notre Dame community can access The Atlantic subscription from anywhere worldwide by visiting The Atlantic’s institutional login page and selecting the University of Notre Dame. The link will automatically direct users to authenticate through Okta.

If you have questions or difficulty accessing your subscription, please submit a Hesburgh Libraries Service Now ticket.
