As Notre Dame fans make their way to New York City for this year's Shamrock Series game, several pieces of Fighting Irish football history will also venture more than 700 miles from their home at the Hesburgh Libraries into historic Yankee Stadium.
The Fighting Irish in New York City: A Conversation with Curators and Archivists, highlights historical football-related materials from the Hesburgh Libraries’ specialized and distinctive collections. The unique exhibit contextualizes and analyzes the rich shared histories of the University of Notre Dame, the New York Yankees and the Fighting Irish football teams' rivalry with Army.
The one-night-only exhibit features materials from Hesburgh Libraries Rare Books and Special Collections and University Archives. Visitors will have the opportunity to view programs, posters, tickets and paraphernalia spanning the decades of the Notre Dame Army rivalry, correspondence between baseball legend Babe Ruth and Knute Rockne, and even see the whistle that the legendary football coach used while leading his Fighting Irish teams.
“Notre Dame has world-class collections available to scholars on campus and around the globe. The dedicated team of archivists and librarians preserve and steward these resources to advance the teaching and research mission of the University,” Patrick Milhoan, head archivist for the University Archives said. “This exhibit highlights ways that our specialized and distinctive collections intersect broadly with areas of historical import — one such area being the intersection of athletics and popular culture.”
Curators Greg Bond and Elizabeth Hogan will be available to discuss broader historical topics like political activism, the social impact of college football, the rise of celebrity culture, changes in communications and technology, and other relevant subjects. Bond serves as sports archivist and curator of the Joyce Sports Research Collection and Hogan is a senior archivist for photographs and graphic materials in the University Archives. She is also co-author of the newly released book Fighting Irish Football: The Notre Dame Tradition in Photographs.
