Access Instructions for Linguistic Data Consortium (LDC) Datasets
Hesburgh Libraries has a yearly subscription membership to the Linguistic Data Consortium (LDC). This membership provides Notre Dame faculty, staff, and students with access to the datasets produced within that subscription year, as well as discount on the purchase of datasets from other years.
Which datasets do we have?
The library began a subscription to LDC in 2014 and receives all datasets produced from 2014 to the current year. We continue to receive access to datasets as they are produced and made available by LDC, and we have several other datasets from previous years that have been purchased directly. For a list of which ones are available for Notre Dame users, please do a search in the library catalog for "Linguistic Data Consortium," or, search by the specific dataset name ("LDC2015T12", for example). Usage of them is governed by LDC membership terms, unless there is an additional user agreement that is specific to a particular dataset. This will be noted in the LDC catalog record (see screenshot below).
How to access them
Datasets to which we have access can be downloaded from the LDC website, or copied from physical media such as a DVD, CD, flash drive, or hard drive. To see which options are available for a particular dataset, search for the dataset name from the LDC catalog, and scroll down to see the Available Media information. A screenshot of a typical LDC catalog entry is shown below.
If the dataset is available as a web download, you will need to register as an LDC user and then have your organization administrator upgrade your guest user status to “organization user.” This is initiated by the web download process, which checks your user status and emails the LDC organization administrator at the University of Notre Dame. Once the organization administrator has upgraded your status, you can download the dataset and use it according to any applicable usage agreement or the LDC membership terms. If there is an additional usage agreement, it will be shown in the License section of the dataset description.
If the dataset is ONLY available on some form of physical media – DVD, CD, hard drive, or flash drive – please email csa-er-management-list@nd.edu. to make arrangements to come to the library to make a copy of the dataset. At that time, any user agreements which apply to these datasets will be made available to you, and you can copy and use the data in accordance with those terms, or the LDC membership terms.
If you have any questions about the library’s LDC subscription, please email csa-er-management-list@nd.edu.
