Special Borrowers
veryone is welcome to make on-site use of the libraries; however, those who do not have a current formal relationship with the University of Notre Dame must obtain a card for special borrowing privileges. These cards do not include personal or off-site access to the Libraries’ licensed electronic resources or services such as Document Delivery or Interlibrary Loan. See below for details on how to obtain special borrowers cards. On-site visitors can access some of the Libraries’ licensed electronic resources on visitor research workstations located on the 1st floor, and on selected tower floors, of Hesburgh Library.
Alumni
Alumni of Notre Dame living in the Michiana area and in good standing with the Alumni Association may request borrowing privileges. Visit the Circulation Desk on the first floor of Hesburgh Library.
Retired Faculty
Retired Notre Dame faculty with valid Notre Dame IDs (Irish1 cards) may check out materials from the Hesburgh Libraries. They are also eligible to apply for OCLC and ALI borrower cards at the Hesburgh Library Circulation Desk. Retired ND faculty with valid NetIDs can use the Hesburgh Libraries’ interlibrary loan and document delivery services, and, depending on licensing terms, can have off-site access to some of the Libraries’ licensed electronic resources. Retired faculty can also access some of the Libraries’ licensed electronic resources on visitor research workstations located on the 1st floor, and on selected tower floors, of Hesburgh Library.

- Faculty and staff spouses should visit Human Resources to start this process
- Spouses of graduate students should fill out the spouse ID card form, and then they will be sent further instructions
- Spouses of undergraduate students need to go to the Registrar's office first
Dependent children of Notre Dame faculty, staff, students who are 18 years of age or older and still a legal dependent may have library privileges:
- If the child is going to school at Bethel, Holy Cross, or Saint Mary's, their University ID card grants them access. They do not need to get a card from Notre Dame.
- If the child is going to school in Indiana, they can apply at their school on their own for a reciprocal borrowers card called ALI (Academic Libraries of Indiana) card.
- If the child is going to an out of state school or is not attending college and is a legal dependent, they must show a copy of filed taxes listing the child as a dependent to receive a guest card. Present this information at the Circulation Desk in Hesburgh Library.
